Shakespeare Returns to BHS

Staff reports

This year’s fall play is As You Like It, William Shakespeare’s comedy about love, deceptive appearances, divided families, reconciliation, and sheep.

“Shakespearean drama always presents a challenge to actors who have to make sense of the language, but the rollicking comedy of As You Like It also gives us one of the Bard’s most amusing comedies,” says Director Maria Ogren, a retired BHS English teacher who has directed the fall play for more than 30 years. “We meet two maidens in disguise, four couples who connect with one another, two evil brothers planning to knock off an inconvenient sibling and niece, a lonely shepherd or two, a melancholy philosopher, and a Duke who, with his loyal companions, has fled to the Forest of Arden to live like Robin Hood and his Merry Men.”

But there’s more.

“Add to that the scenery and props — including a flock of sheep — created by a dedicated stage crew and a bit of song and dance,” said Ogren, who has directed the fall play for the last XXX years. “It’s easy to see why this play offers a happy theatrical  experience just in time for the holidays.”

As You Like It will be presented in the Cathyann Roding Auditorium, December 8th and 9th, at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $5.00.
