Who Will Wear Mr. BHS Crown This Year?

By Jackson Mariotti and Sharon Webster On June 6th, eleven Branford High School upperclassmen will battle for the chance to be crowned Mr. BHS. Out of the many traditions the Branford High School community has, Mr. BHS is an event that welcomes all four classes to the auditorium for a talent show. However, this is no ordinary talent show. The evening includes an entrance, formal wear, a performance to showcase the chosen talent of the individual, group dances, and interviews to close the event. This year’s event is the 8th annual and the theme is flashback Friday, which can include anything in the past from yesterday to the beginning of time. The event is sponsored by the school’s Interact club. This year’s contestants are: Jack Bishop Jack holds the class superlative for “Most School Spirit”. Bishop is a Model Congress president, captain of the varsity ski club, and a varsity pitcher for the Hornets baseball team. He will be studying psychology at South Carolina University Justin Campos Justin is into humanities, swimming and tennis, and has been playing the flute for 8 years. Also, impressively, he has acquired a black belt in Taekwondo after years of training in the Himalayas. His dream school is Harvard and would to study political science if accepted today. Campos believes that a junior needs to step up and win it for once since it has been so senior-denominated lately. Aodhan Dunn Aodhan clearly loves to run, as he is a three season runner. He also enjoys watching movies and listening to music. When asked why he should win he said “I don’t think juniors usually win or if a junior has ever won so that would be cool, but either way I don’t care, I’m just doing it because it’s a fun experience.” He would like to go to film school to become a screenwriter and a director. An interesting fact is that he is scared of horses. Dan Frye Dan Frye, the science guy, loves biology and history. Although he is not involved in the realm of organized athletics, if the school had a men’s volleyball team, he would definitely join. Concerning his musical career, Frye says, ”It’s pretty fun acting like an idiot in front of total strangers. I’m not sure how far I’ll pursue it.” Sonny Giannini Sonny is into model building, robotics, drawing, seeing movies, and competing in the hurdles for Branford Track and Field. He believes he should win because he is a ridiculous individual with a fiery personality who brings the fun making the most dreary days sunny, and yes pun intended. He hopes to later in life marry another ginger to repopulate his dying species. Rob Hardy Rob sings and plays guitar. He’s going to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. He has participated in the play and musical. Last year he was a Mr. BHS contestant, and hopes to come back to win it this year. He thinks he will win because his street has a pretty good track record for winners so far, because Justin Pellazza is his neighbor. Gobari Idamkue Gobari’s interests include going to church, playing soccer, dancing, singing, drawing, and playing the piano. He says that he’s not doing Mr. BHS to win, just for the fun of the show. He hopes to play D1 soccer and study physical therapy in college. An interesting fact is that Gobari means “God’s Eagle” and his middle name is Eagle. He is God’s Eagle Eagle Idamkue. Alex King Alex likes sports, wakeboarding, fishing, hiking, and practically anything outdoors. He will go to Clark University in Massachusetts to study business management and entrepreneurship while playing college baseball. He believes he should win because he has never performed on stage before, and his act is pushing him outside of his comfort zone. One interesting fact about Alex is that he has farmed oysters commercially and sold them to numerous restaurants. Pat Laske Pat loves running and shredding guitar. Next year, he will attend Providence College to study Marketing. Laske has been quoted as saying that he should win Mr. BHS because he “bleeds red and white.” A fun fact about Pat is that he enjoys gluing his fingers and peeling off the dry paste. Jason Pierre-Louis Jason Pierre-Louis is really into music, video games, and lifting. Next year, he plans on attending Drexel University to study computer science. Although we all saw him tap dance in the musical Crazy for You, not many people know that Jason knows all the lyrics to Monster by Kanye West. Griffin Sandler Griffin enjoys being active whether through Crossfit WODs or playing Marco Polo in the kiddie pool. Humorously, he adds, “long walks on the beach” to his impressive resume. Accepted at Tulane, Sandler looks to major in math at this point, although that dream is subject to change.Griffin also loves to hackysack and enjoys the sport in his free time with his friends.Griffin Sandler believes that he has what it takes to be Mr. BHS simply because he was born to do this.
