News in Review: The Top News Stories at BHS Last School Year

During last school year The Branford Buzz covered a variety of important and interesting news events from the Branford High School community. A lot happened that is worthy of news coverage.

With a new school year underway, the staff of the Buzz is excited to continue serving as the online news source of the Branford High School community. The new school year also provides an opportunity to look back on what made news at Branford High School in 2021-22.

The following were the most popular stories on The Buzz last school year, based on page views.

#5 – Parking lot woes

The fifth most viewed article on The Buzz last year uncovered the frustration that many students felt about parking at the school. Despite paying for the right to park, there are often not enough parking spots in the student lot because some teachers park there instead of using the assigned faculty lot on the other side of the building. Many students asked for answers to the problem.

#4 – Mask controversy

In the spring, the Board of Education eased its requirements on masks in school. Wearing a mask for a student or teacher became optional as of Feb. 28. As the board debated that decision, the Branford Buzz ran a pair of editorials about the issue. One editorial argued that mask-wearing should no longer be required and another argued that the mask-wearing mandate should be extended.

#3 – Students find locked bathrooms a pain in the you know what

Throughout the school year, bathrooms in the building were often locked during the day. To many students, this caused problems when they really needed to find one. School officials cited vandalism and other issues as the cause for the periodic lock downs. The Buzz wrote about this in April.

#2 – Mr. Synodi retires

Longtime physical education teacher, coach and athletic director Savas Synodi announced his retirement in the spring. The popular teacher, who had a 40+ year career in education, taught his last day at Branford High School in April. The Branford Buzz interviewed Mr. Synodi and wrote about his career.

#1 – Cellphone Silenced at BHS

Arguably, the biggest news event at Branford High School happened in May when school officials enacted a new ban on cellphones in classrooms. The new policy required that students no longer use cellphones in class, but they were still allowed in the commons, during passing time, and in study halls. The Branford Buzz was the first news organization to report on the change, which brought statewide news coverage to Branford High School.
