HORNETS SPORTS WRAP- Hornets near finish of regular seasons as teams move on to SCCs

Girl’s and Boy’s soccer, as well as football continue their regular season throughout the week while Girl’s swimming and Field Hockey begin their first round of SCCs.

Boy’s Soccer vs. Fairfield Prep(2-0 W): Starting off the week, the boys traveled to Fairfield Prep and beat them in a shutout on Prep’s dedicated senior night.

Scoring for Branford was senior Andrew Wirtz and junior Ralph Ciarleglio. Keeper and junior Alec Aceves-Acosta played an amazing game, making many incredible saves to keep a clean sheet for Branford and aid them in their victory.

Later in the week the boys lost to Bassick in an away game. Despite the loss, the boys did qualify for states and will spend the next week preparing for them.

Girl’s Soccer vs. Career(9-0 W): The girl’s soccer team provided and brought home yet another victory for the Hornets. The girls shutout Career, dominating them throughout the entirety of the game.

Branford scoring was led by senior Melanie Sachs who had 3 goals, freshman Ava Ferrie who also had 3 goals, senior Nicole Evans who scored 1, and senior Julia Robins scoring 1. Senior Rose Lockery and junior Alayna Boileau each had assists to contribute to the scoring.

The girls also qualified for states and will begin practicing and preparing in the days leading up to their first round.

Girl’s Swim SCC Trials: After the girls completed their regular season 4-6, on Saturday, November 2nd they traveled to Cheshire to swim in SCC trials.

For many girls it being their last swim of the season gave them reason to push themselves more than ever before to get a best season time or lifetime best swim. Many girls did do so, dropping multiple seconds like juniors Delaney Cotter and Jen Antell in the 100 Free, junior and senior Sophia Esposito and Brooke O’Leary in the 100 Back, and junior Anna Dendas in the 100 Butterfly.

In addition many girls qualified for SCC Finals, such as sophomores Rory Jacobson and Erika Barone, juniors Melissa Juliano and Katie Parsell, and seniors Cordelia Keberle, Adrienne Dillon, and Gabby Gillis.

SCC Finals will take place on Monday, November 4th.

Girl’s Field Hockey: Throughout the week the girls took two defeats, yet finished the week on Saturday by winning their first round of SCCs.

On Tuesday the girls lost to Cheshire 1-0 in overtime with 4 minutes and 30 seconds left on the clock. On Wednesday they took on North Branford and were defeated 4-0.

On Saturday, against Mercy they defeated them in a shutout 3-0 to take victory in their first round of SCCs. For Branford, seniors Molly Zaffino and Brianna Shaw each scored one goal, in addition to freshman Scout Engstrom. Senior Maggie Martin assisted Zaffino’s goal. The girls now advance to the next round of SCCs.

Girl’s Volleyball: To begin their week the girls took a loss against Hand, but finished it, and ended their season with a victory against Wilbur Cross.

Against Hand the girls kept their spirits high yet lost all 3 sets, with scoring going back and forth. Against Cross, Branford took victory in all 3 sets, leading the scoring for a majority in each set.

The girls finished their season 3-16.

Football vs. Jonathan Law(42-21 W): In an intense game, the boys were able to defeat Jon Law to add to their list of victories.

Senior Spencer Landsbach, junior Kam Holmes, and senior Sean Kelly all contributed to the win by each having rushing touchdowns. As quarterback, Kelly threw 2 touchdowns to senior Cam Mills and threw a 2 point conversion to junior Mehki Barnett. Holmes also had an interception along with senior Ian McDonald who had a fumble recovery. Throughout the game defense made many stops and sacks on Law’s quarterback. Jake Bodner, the kicker went 3/4 for Branford’s extra point.

On Friday, November 8th the boys travel away, to take on Bassick.
