Ever since it first opened in 2023, the Thrift Shop has turned room A15 into more than just a place to find a sweater or a new pair of pants.
The shop operates on a unique model: everything is free. Students can visit during lunch or study hall and are invited to take up to 10 items per month, at no cost. The inventory relies entirely on the generosity of others, with donations flowing in from the community and local organizations like Goodwill.
The store was born from a “reduce, reuse, recycle” initiative to ensure every student has access to the clothing they need to feel their best. It was originally founded by teacher Kelly Yates, and social workers Melissa Simone, Diane Queen, and Jen Miller.
The shop serves the student body, but it also provides a unique learning environment for the students who run it. For student volunteer Gabriela Silva, the shop is a place of growth.
“I feel like it was an opportunity to gain some responsibility,” Silva said to The Buzz. “When I decide to start working [in the future], I shall know how to become independent and find ways to collaborate.”
The job isn’t always easy, however. Silva noted that the work can be “challenging and tiresome” due to the high volume of daily donations. Nevertheless, she takes pride in maintaining the store’s professional atmosphere.
“I have to make sure that everything is neat and clean—no empty hangers or clothes on the floor—so when the customers come, it will be seen as a nice and organized place,” she added.
The Thrift Shop is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in room A15 on the first floor.
