Fall in love again with Calliope’s Winter/Valentine’s issue

By The Calliope Staff, Guest Contributor

Think you smell something? You do, and it’s the ripe blend of romance and snow blower exhaust because the Winter/Valentine’s Day issue of Calliope has landed at Branford High School!

The 58th issue of BHS’s magazine of student creativity features the magazine’s first-ever edible artwork: Senior Hana Omeragic’s cover photograph of her colorful array of flower-frosted cupcakes.

“They are a lot of work, especially the tulips, but I love making them,” Omeragic said. “I’m glad the flowers fit into the Valentine’s Day theme. And if anyone needs a last-minute Valentine’s Day gift, let me know! Just kidding, I’m too busy.”

Two more seniors’ work appears prominently on the back cover. Long time contributors Noah Fischer’s and Stacia Comens’s works are, respectively, an oil painting of the Branford River and a collage that includes a cryptic message. Comen has another collage inside the issue.

“We received a lot of great submissions — enough to fill a whole nother issue,” said Calliope Editor-in-Chief Gabby Silva. “If anyone is disappointed, they should definitely blame Mr. Matthiessen.”

Inside, the magazine includes its customary diversity of writing and artwork: from memoirs to free-verse poetry, and still-life paintings to photography, clothing to jewelry, and papier-mâché masks. Written works in the issue are by Angelica Pagan Amon, Giulana Barros, Michaela Cribbin, Ellie Harmon, Evan Marsh, Gabbie Silva, and one anonymous submission.

In addition to the works named above, artwork in this issue includes work by Jack Bartels, Kendall Fagan, Amelia Francisco, Liv Galli, Aliza Giordano, Siara Humphries, Emilia Jeffery, Tate Jones, Camryn Lyons, Emerson Manchanda, James Memmott, Titi Nwakalor, Payton Paleski, Lillian Rank, and Kamryn Stackpole.

Other Calliope staff include Makenzie Petrillo, Estelle Pechkis, and Titi Nwakalor. If you’d like to contribute to Calliope or join the club, keep an eye out for meeting times and deadlines this spring, talk to a current staff member or club advisor Mr. Matthiessen, or join the club’s Google Classroom with code j7v5c2l.
