The 41st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Breakfast is being held at Branford High School this Monday.
Sponsored by the MLK Heritage Foundation and the Branford Public Schools District, the event includes a full breakfast served by the Cooking for a Cause club, as well as a performance from the BHS Music Makers student choir (both pictured above).
This year, Preston Tisdale, a civil rights attorney from Connecticut, is the featured speaker at the event.
Tisdale has been a lawyer for over 40 years, fighting against civil injustice in the state. Among a variety of recognitions, he received the NAACP Distinguished Service Award for his extensive work and dedication when he was public defender.
He transitioned into private law and has been at the Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder firm since 2010.
His speech, titled as “Now Is the Time to Take a Stand,” will address stepping forward in times of increasing uncertainty.
“The breakfast gives people the chance to learn, share experiences, and connect on common ground,” said Mary Fitz-Perry, the President of the MLK Heritage Foundation.
She also added how the event continues to grow every year, recalling how last year, even during a snowstorm, there were almost 300 people who attended.
The Cooking for a Cause club caters for many in house events at the high school, with foods teacher Mindy Baker citing her gratitude the administration continues to host the event.
“We are grateful that the Superintendent has allowed us to use the school on a day when the building is usually closed,” she said to The Buzz.
Professionals from the Branford Rotary will be assisting the club in serving the expected 300 guests; the full breakfast menu offered will consist of eggs, grits, bacon, sausage, pancakes, coffee, and more.
The event is being held on Monday, January 19th, at 8:30 a.m. in the Branford High School cafeteria. Tickets are $5 for students, and $20 for adults, which can be purchased online.
All of the earnings will benefit the foundation’s scholarship funds for students of the high school.
