Hornets Sports Wrap- Hornets have mix of victories while the fall season picks up

Wins from volleyball, field hockey, and boy’s soccer start the week while the fall season picks up.

Girl’s Soccer vs. East Haven(2-0 W): The girl’s soccer team took victory over the Yellowjackets, our rivals, with a shutout.

Alayna Boileau and Rose Lockery each scored a goal, receiving the pass and dribbling through opposing players. Nicole Evans had an assist to a goal to contribute to the Hornet win.

Girl’s Swim vs. Amity(L): On Tuesday the girl’s swim team took on tough competitor and strong opponent which resulted in a meet competing against each other, one selves and the clock. Despite the loss, many girls had best season times, in addition to lifetime best swims.

Anna Dendas, Katie Parsell, Melissa Juliano, Delaney Cotter, Emma Hall, and Alex Acquarulo all had best times of the season and or lifetime swims.

Boy’s Soccer vs. Amity(2-2 T): Goalkeeper Alec Aceves-Acosta made many great saves to keep the boys in the game. Amity scored first, but to finish the first half Ralph Ciarleglio assisted James Verdesoto’s score for the Hornets.

Throughout the second half Amity and Branford played very back and forth, Amity scoring their second goal to drive ahead making the score 2-1. Within the last minutes of the second half, Andrew Wirtz scored the second goal to end the game in a tie.

Field Hockey vs Southington(6-1 W): The girl’s field hockey team jumped on Southington early in the game, to start their advance on scoring goals.

Senior Brianna Shaw had three out of the six goals of the game, in addition to senior Hailey Brunner having three assists.

Boy’s Soccer vs Fairfield Prep(2-0 W): On Friday the boys took on Prep in a game the Hornets controlled for a majority of the game, shutting them out.

The goals that contributed to the Hornet victory was scored by Ciarleglio in the first half, assisted by Din Durmic and Wirtz in the second half.

The boys will compete against Bassick on the turf on Monday, October 7th.

Girl’s Swim vs. Cheshire(L): Facing another difficult opponent, the Rams have had a strong and large lineup for years. Knowing this, the Hornets again made focus on betterment of themselves.

With more and more best swims happening every meet, drops of time came from Nicola Colossale, Delaney Cotter, Sydney Baker, and Juliana Torello.

The girl’s face Shelton away, on Monday, October 7th.

Football vs. Sheehan(60-14 L): On the weekend the Hornets took to the road to Sheehan. Sheehan came out on top quickly over the Hornets, taking an early advance.

Despite the outcome, the boys put up a good effort. They continue to grow and better in their away games, to come back even stronger on the turf for a cheering student section in the weeks to come.

Next week the boys will compete against Bethel, away.

Girl’s Volleyball vs. Daniel Hand(3-0 L): On Friday the girls faced Hand, in a difficult battle amongst sets. The girls gave all that they could, yet still came out in defeat.

Field Hockey vs. Lauralton Hall(8-1 W): To finish the week off with a Hornet victory, the girl’s field hockey team dominated Lauralton Hall, started early on in the game.

To contribute to the win, Shaw had three goals and two assists, Scout Engstrom had two goals, Molly Zaffino scored, and Maggie Martin had assists. Goalie Gianna Messina had amazing saves in the goal which allowed for the Hornets to stay on top.

After the game, coach Pete Frye told the girls, “This isn’t the worst or best team we have ever played. This is the score because of the way you guys are playing. You trusted the process…”

The girls will take on Amity on Monday, October 17th for their next game.
